Min Taka

Your stage name refers to the myth of a lost planet — how did you come up with it, and what does it mean to you?

I came up with it when my sister was looking at tarot cards, and I received one that said “Mintaka,” with the message “longing for home, belonging.” These words resonated with me because I was constantly moving, trying to stay grounded, but ultimately struggling to find a sense of belonging in my life. I chose this name so I could create my own place of belonging through my music. Plus, it has the last three letters of my name, “Yasemin,” so I took it as a sign. :)

Which artists inspire you when creating your music? Do you notice that your sources of inspiration change depending on the language you’re writing in?

I would say I’m very inspired by theatrics and drama within music, so artists like Caroline Polacheck, Chappell Roan, Mitski & Alice Phoebe Lou really influence me. My sources of inspiration tend to change more with time than with the language I’m writing in. That said, some Turkish artists, like Bülent Ortaçgil and Nil Karaibrahimgil, definitely inspire me when I’m writing lyrics in Turkish.

Which of your songs would you play for someone who doesn’t know you at all, and why?

I would play “CIN SODA” for someone who wants to get to know my essence, “Lal” for someone who wants to understand my upbringing, and “Boston” for someone who wants to hear one of my stories.
